Chapter Ten
Five minutes later, they were both settling into the backseat of a yellow Toyota.
The driver, a middle aged Pakistani man, kept giving her odd looks from under grey bushy eyebrows and an oversized green turban. Sure, she was barefoot in broad daylight and wearing a menâs wool coat in summer, but he mustâve seen worse at 4am downtown. At least she was sober and the coat covered all the good bits.
âProblem?â Damon challenged when he noticed the older man eyeing her like that.
âNo, sir, not at all.â The driver replied and turned his eyes back on the road. âWhere to?â
âThe Millennium Hotel, on 79th, and stop at the first clothes shop you see. Make that a womenâs clothes shop,â he instructed.
Jinx let her hair fall around her face. A curtain behind which to hide her embarrassment. Damon, for his part, didnât seem at all phased by the situation. Any awkwardness he might have had inside the house was now gone from his body and voice. He sure got over things fast.
What kind of life did he lead?
Wild parties and sexy women were his norm?
Could she ever compete with that?
She wasnât anything special. Mousy brown hair, average height and weight, didnât own a single pretty dress, no hobbies, no future. All she knew was hunting and monsters and bad late night TV.
She wasnât even good in the sack. She was a damn virgin with fantasies taken out of porn movies, for fuckâs sake. A guy like Damon had his pick of women, all far better than she could be. Gods knew what he saw in her when he hit on her back at the house.
She backed into her seat and leaned into the side door, gathering the coat around her as tightly as it would go.
Damon tapped her shoulder and shook his head at her, smiling. His teeth were white and perfectly straight, like out of a Colgate commercial. He was so perfect and so out of her league.
âDonât hide in plain sight. I looked way worse after parties,â he said and winked. Was he putting on a show for their driver? âI was once with this crew of good for nothing idiots⦠we were supposedly at a friend of a friend of a friendâs place. You know how it is, no?â She didnât, but she nodded anyway. âAnd things were getting hot with a girl that kept hitting on me. Next thing I knew, cops were all over the place and I had to jump out the window, stark naked. It turned out we had all been there illegally. Some dude broke in, declared it a party and it went downhill from there.â
Thatâs the Damon I know. Bad boy to the core yet still cool. In a weird, frat bro way.
Still, he had made an effort to get past their social blunder, so the least she could do was come out of her shell a little and meet him halfway.
âWere you really naked?â
âYeah. My ass graced the New York Times.
